"Letters are among the most significant memorial a person can leave behind them."
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

A little conventional, perhaps unimaginative, hardly a niche interest... a bit like love or happiness.

It is a little miracle that an intricacy of a sonata can be rendered from this odd bit of carved wood. But to call it that, of course, is wilfully to ignore the vital difference that craft, beauty, civilisation make in the transmutation of materials into objects of art. Elegant lines, polished hardwood, the caress against the cheek: the violin ought to be enjoyed for its own aesthetic triumph—though if you want to play some Paganini I won’t stop you.

Perhaps you encountered a fascinating person at a concert; perhaps a character of unimpeachable harmony is the subject of your attention; perhaps you wish to reward a friend’s newly commenced attempts at making music: write them a letter.

    • Quotation

      Sharp violins proclaim

      Their jealous pangs, and desperation,

      For the fair disdainful dame.

      - Dryden

    • Violin Fact

Perhaps the finest examples of the violin were made by the Stradiveri, Guarneri, Guadagnini and Amati families from the 16th to the 18th century in Brescia and Cremona. The oldest violin in existence today is one built by Andre Amati around 1565.
