A well-kept secret runs thus: the best Christmas treats are just as good at other times of the year.
In the mountains of the Caucasus snow crusts the needles of Abies nordmanniana. The Nordmann fir stands in grandeur, fringing the crests of some of the most spectacular, silent and splendid landscape in all the wide world. It is a magic thing in a strange land, for the fir forest is dark and deep. If that’s all a bit too far from home, then just know you can put a bauble on one and remember the best time of the year.
Perhaps the pristine vistas of evergreen beauty recall someone to mind; perhaps you want to stock up for Christmas (it’s never too early, unless you’re buying from elsewhere in which case it’s way too early); perhaps a friend has been strong and noble for you in recent times: write them a letter.
"Nordmann Fir"
Quotation
I remember, I remember,
The fir trees dark and high;
I used to think their slender tops
Were close against the sky:
It was a childish ignorance,
But now 'tis little joy
To know I'm farther off from heav'n
Than when I was a boy.
- Thomas Hood
